0011|     REQUESTING RECOGNITION OF THE TREMENDOUS POSITIVE IMPACT THE
    |
0012|     FILM INDUSTRY HAS HAD ON NEW MEXICO FOR THE LAST ONE HUNDRED
    |
0013|     YEARS.

0015|          WHEREAS, the year 1998 marks the one hundredth year since
    |
0016|     the first known motion picture was filmed in New Mexico, the
    |
0017|     Edison company's Indian Day School (1898); and
    |
0018|          WHEREAS, the years 1912-1930 brought pioneers in the film
    |
0019|     industry to New Mexico, especially Albuquerque, Las Vegas and
    |
0020|     Silver City; pioneers such as D.W. Griffith, Romaine Fielding,
    |
0021|     Mack Sennett, Mary Pickford, Tom Mix, Robert Flaherty and King
    |
0022|     Vidor; and
    |
0023|          WHEREAS, in the decades of the forties, fifties and early
    |
0024|     sixties the western became a popular film genre with many
    |
0025|     films made in the Gallup area; and
    |

0001|          WHEREAS, in 1968 the New Mexico film commission was
    |
0002|     established under the administration of Governor David Cargo,
    |
0003|     one of the first state funded agencies of this kind in the
    |
0004|     nation created to promote location filming outside of
    |
0005|     Hollywood; and
    |
0006|          WHEREAS, in the thirty-year history of the film
    |
0007|     commission, currently known as the New Mexico film division, a
    |
0008|     branch of the economic development department, many
    |
0009|     distinguished filmmakers have come to New Mexico including: 
    |
0010|     Robert Redford, Lawrence Kasdan, John Carpenter, Sidney Lumet,
    |
0011|     Billy Wilder and Elia Kazan; and
    |
0012|          WHEREAS, the current year brings a total number of three
    |
0013|     hundred feature films (for theatrical release), televison
    |
0014|     movies and series and many hundreds of commercials, music
    |
0015|     videos, documentaries and other media projects filmed in New
    |
0016|     Mexico; and
    |
0017|          WHEREAS, the film industry has provided tremendous
    |
0018|     benefits to the economy of the entire state, developing a
    |
0019|     highly skilled labor pool, a talent (acting) pool and a
    |
0020|     business infrastructure that have created roughly one billion
    |
0021|     dollars ($1,000,000,000) in economic impact in New Mexico over
    |
0022|     the past decade alone;
    |
0023|          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
    |
0024|     REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that it applaud the
    |
0025|     efforts of the New Mexico film division of the economic
    |

0001|     development department, recognize the tremendous positive
    |
0002|     impact the film industry has had on the state's economy and
    |
0003|     celebrate the significant role the state has played in its
    |
0004|     100-year history of filmmaking; and
    |
0005|          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial shall
    |
0006|     be transmitted to the New Mexico film division of the economic
    |
0007|     development department.
