0001| SENATE JOINT MEMORIAL 17 | 0002| 43RD LEGISLATURE - STATE OF NEW MEXICO - SECOND SESSION, 1998 | 0003| INTRODUCED BY | 0004| JOHN ARTHUR SMITH | 0005| | 0006| | 0007| | 0008| | 0009| | 0010| A JOINT MEMORIAL | 0011| REQUESTING THE STATE PARKS DIVISION OF THE ENERGY, MINERALS | 0012| AND NATURAL RESOURCES DEPARTMENT IN COOPERATION WITH THE NEW | 0013| MEXICO NATIONAL GUARD AND OTHER INTERESTED PARTIES TO STUDY | 0014| THE FEASIBILITY OF ESTABLISHING A PRE-WORLD WAR I MILITARY | 0015| EQUIPMENT DISPLAY AT THE PANCHO VILLA STATE PARK IN COLUMBUS | 0016| IN LUNA COUNTY. | 0017| | 0018| WHEREAS, on March 9, 1916 Pancho Villa and more than six | 0019| hundred villistas raided Columbus and the United States army's | 0020| Camp Furlong; and | 0021| WHEREAS, eight soldiers, ten civilians and more than two | 0022| hundred villistas lost their lives; and | 0023| WHEREAS, the villistas were pursued by General John J. | 0024| "Blackjack" Pershing in a punitive expedition into Mexico; and | 0025| WHEREAS, the punitive expedition was instrumental in |

0001| preparing United States troops for entry into World War I and | 0002| involved the first combat use of aircraft and various other | 0003| mechanized equipment; and | 0004| WHEREAS, local historians have located examples of the | 0005| aircraft, military vehicles and equipment used in the punitive | 0006| expedition which may be available for display in an | 0007| appropriately designed facility; | 0008| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE | 0009| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the state parks division of the | 0010| energy, minerals and natural resources department, with the | 0011| cooperation of the New Mexico national guard and other | 0012| interested parties, determine which appropriate pre-World War | 0013| I military equipment of the type used during the punitive | 0014| expedition is available by donation or purchase, and the | 0015| approximate cost of acquisition, restoration and display | 0016| within Pancho Villa state park; and | 0017| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the state parks division of | 0018| the energy, minerals and natural resources department and the | 0019| New Mexico national guard report their findings to the | 0020| legislative finance committee by November 1, 1998; and | 0021| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be | 0022| sent to the director of the state parks division of the | 0023| energy, minerals and natural resources department and the | 0024| commandant of the New Mexico national guard. | 0025|  |
