0011|     DESIGNATING FEBRUARY 2, 1998 AS "NEW MEXICO MESA DAY".

0013|          WHEREAS, New Mexico MESA, incorporated, a nonprofit
    |
0014|     organization, is part of a national initiative promoting
    |
0015|     educational enrichment for pre-college students from
    |
0016|     historically underrepresented ethnic groups; and
    |
0017|          WHEREAS, currently in seventy-four schools statewide, the
    |
0018|     New Mexico MESA program has grown dramatically since its
    |
0019|     introduction in 1982 in seven schools, and is celebrating its
    |
0020|     fifteen-year anniversary this year statewide, and it provides
    |
0021|     thousands of middle, junior and high school students with
    |
0022|     year-round support and career guidance; and
    |
0023|          WHEREAS, New Mexico MESA activities include tutoring;
    |
0024|     independent study; academic, university and career counseling;
    |
0025|     field trips and competitions; leadership workshops; summer
    |

0001|     enrichment, employment and mentorship programs; and
    |
0002|     scholarship incentives; and 
    |
0003|          WHEREAS, New Mexico MESA provides support not only to
    |
0004|     students but to their teachers, families and community; and
    |
0005|          WHEREAS, through New Mexico MESA's efforts, participating
    |
0006|     students receive the educational enrichment experiences and
    |
0007|     practical help they need to achieve academic excellence and
    |
0008|     prepare for college majors in mathematics, engineering and the
    |
0009|     sciences;
    |
0010|          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
    |
0011|     STATE OF NEW MEXICO that it designate February 2, 1998 as "New
    |
0012|     Mexico MESA Day"; and
    |
0013|          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that it hereby recognize and
    |
0014|     applaud the New Mexico MESA organization for its dedication to
    |
0015|     preparing minority students for careers in mathematics,
    |
0016|     engineering and the sciences; and 
    |
0017|          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be
    |
0018|     transmitted to New Mexico MESA, incorporated.
