ROMERO | 0005| | 0006| | 0007| | 0008| | 0009| | 0010| A MEMORIAL | 0011| RECOGNIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ADOLESCENT SOCIAL ACTION | 0012| PROGRAM AND URGING THE BOARD OF REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF | 0013| NEW MEXICO TO INCORPORATE THE PROGRAM INTO THE UNIVERSITY OF | 0014| NEW MEXICO SCHOOL OF MEDICINE. | 0015| | 0016| WHEREAS, the adolescent social action program is a | 0017| collaborative, primary prevention program developed in | 0018| Albuquerque whose goals are to reduce mortality and morbidity | 0019| among adolescents and empower young people to be change agents | 0020| in their communities; and | 0021| WHEREAS, the adolescent social action program was formed | 0022| in 1982 as the alcohol substance abuse prevention program in | 0023| the school of medicine's department of family, community and | 0024| emergency medicine at the university of New Mexico and has | 0025| since evolved into a program with multiple affiliations that |

0001| provides a unique link between the community and the | 0002| university; and | 0003| WHEREAS, more than three thousand children and families | 0004| throughout New Mexico have received adolescent social action | 0005| program primary prevention services, which include encouraging | 0006| at-risk adolescents to explore drug-free options and | 0007| encouraging youth to work to implement social change; and | 0008| WHEREAS, over the years, community services have included | 0009| research, technical and teacher training and youth social | 0010| action projects such as fotonovellas, community murals, | 0011| involvement in campaigns against tobacco advertising, | 0012| involvement in campaigns against the use of alcohol at the | 0013| state fair, gang prevention task forces and presentations at | 0014| local and national conferences; and | 0015| WHEREAS, the adolescent social action program has | 0016| provided training, practicum experience and education to over | 0017| four hundred university students who act as facilitators with | 0018| small groups of youth; and | 0019| WHEREAS, programs such as the adolescent social action | 0020| program should be encouraged to continue working for the | 0021| betterment of society; | 0022| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE | 0023| OF NEW MEXICO that appreciation and encouragement be expressed | 0024| to the staff of the adolescent social action program for its | 0025| work in helping youth from at-risk communities and its role in |

0001| making Albuquerque and New Mexico a better place to live; and | 0002| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be | 0003| transmitted to the president of the board of regents and the | 0004| president of the university of New Mexico, to the vice | 0005| president of the health sciences center and the Dean Roth | 0006| school of medicine at the university of New Mexico and to the | 0007| adolescent social action program. | 0008|  |
