AN ACT

RELATING TO EDUCATION; ESTABLISHING A MENTORSHIP PROGRAM FOR BEGINNING TEACHERS.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

Section 1. A new section of the Public School Code is enacted to read:

"[NEW MATERIAL] MENTORSHIP PROGRAM FOR BEGINNING TEACHERS.--The state board shall require a full school-year mentorship for all beginning teachers. The board shall adopt and promulgate rules related to the mentorship program to provide that a beginning teacher:

A. shall receive a one-year provisional certificate while he is participating in the mentorship program and he shall be paid a regular salary during the mentoring period;

B. shall work with a mentoring team that provides induction support and assesses the beginning teacher's ability to teach; and

C. who passes the mentorship program shall be eligible for a standard license."
