AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO CREATE A CONSORTIUM OF EDUCATORS TO IMPROVE STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AND EDUCATIONAL SUCCESS OF NATIVE AMERICAN STUDENTS.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

Section 1. APPROPRIATION.--Five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the state department of public education for expenditure in fiscal year 2000 for the purpose of creating a consortium of educators of Native American students to improve student achievement and educational success by coordinating a systematic approach to improve mathematics and science proficiency, increasing completion of high school and post-secondary school education and developing ways to reduce factors that impede educational performance. Members of the consortium shall be representatives of the tribal governments with students in New Mexico, tribal education offices that work with students in New Mexico, the state board of education, the state department of public education, public elementary, middle and secondary schools that serve large populations of Native American students and post-secondary educational institutions, including tribal or federally created schools, serving Native American students. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2000 shall revert to the general fund.
