AN ACT

RELATING TO LOCAL SCHOOL BOARDS; PROVIDING GUIDELINES FOR THE HIRING OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

Section 1. A new section of the Public School Code, Section 22-5-4.8 NMSA 1978, is enacted to read:

"22-5-4.8. [NEW MATERIAL] LOCAL SCHOOL BOARD--HIRING OF SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS.--

A. A local school board shall hire a superintendent of schools for a period not to exceed two years and not to extend past the date on which newly elected local school board members take office.

B. The provisions of Subsection A of this section do not preclude a newly elected local school board from rehiring the superintendent of schools when the newly elected local school board members take office."
