AN ACT

CREATING THE COMMISSION ON INSURANCE LEGISLATION.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

Section 1. COMMISSION CREATED--MEMBERSHIP--TERMS.--There is created the "commission on insurance legislation". The New Mexico legislative council shall appoint three members of the senate and three members of the house of representatives to serve on the commission. At least one commission member shall be a member of the minority party in the house and at least one commission member shall be a member of the minority party in the senate. Commission members shall serve two-year terms.

Section 2. COMMISSION DUTIES.--The commission on insurance legislation shall be a member of the national conference of insurance legislators on behalf of the state and shall:

A. carry forward the participation of this state as a member of the national conference of insurance legislators;

B. help educate and inform the legislature on insurance issues that continue to increase in their complexity and in their impact upon constituents;

C. endeavor to improve the quality of state insurance regulation and make insurance more affordable and available to families and businesses;

D. cooperate with other state legislatures in fighting federal initiatives that encroach upon the state regulation of the insurance industry; and

E. report to the New Mexico legislative council at least once each year on its activities.
