SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

This bill appropriates $90.0 from the general fund for expenditure in fiscal year 2000 to fund the expansion of a summer school program in the Santa Fe Public School District for five-year-old students who have not previously attended pre-school.

Significant Issues

The Agency indicates that the Santa Fe Public Schools propose to serve sixty preschoolers during the 1999 Summer School session. The program would be housed at the Bilingual Early Childhood Center.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

This bill reduces the general fund by $90.0 in fiscal year 2000. These funds will pay for transportation, instructional materials and supplies, playground equipment, computers, and software. Last year the program was funded by Title I and state bilingual funds. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2000 will revert to the general fund.

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

The Agency indicates that the State Department of Education staff will have increased responsibilities, however, they will be able to absorb the responsibilities into their current capacity.
