SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

This bill appropriates $386.9 to the Board of Regents of the University of New Mexico for the purpose of expanding the master's in public health degree program at the School of Medicine to maintain accreditation.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

The appropriation of $386.9 contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general fund. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of FY00 shall revert to the general fund.

RELATIONSHIP

This bill relates to House Bill 49.

OTHER SUBSTANTIVE ISSUES

According to the CHE, the UNM Health Sciences Center (UNMHSC) advanced a request to the CHE for funds to implement a master's level program in Physical Therapy in order to retain accreditation, but accreditation for the program in public health is not in jeopardy at this time. A proposal similar to that proposed in this bill was made by UNMHSC to the CHE in the form of a joint request for additional funds for the Master's in Public Health and the Center for Population Health programs at the School of Medicine.

The CHE suggests the following language: The institution receiving the appropriation in this bill shall submit a program evaluation to the LFC and CHE by August 1, 2002, detailing the benefits to the State of New Mexico.
