SUMMARY



Synopsis of Bill



This bill appropriates $345,336 to the Board of Regents of the New Mexico State University's College of Education for the regional educational technology assistance program (RETA). The appropriation shall be used as follows: $88.2 to develop and disseminate curriculum models and Internet materials for teacher education in classroom use of computer technology and $257,136 to develop regional resource centers to sustain teacher professional development in effective integration of technology in the classroom.



Significant Issues



According to the CHE, this project was not included in the list of eleven projects requested by the institution. This project is a partnership between the State Department of Education and the Los Alamos National Laboratory.





FISCAL IMPLICATIONS



The appropriation of $345.3 contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general fund. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of FY00 shall revert to the general fund.



OTHER SUBSTANTIVE ISSUES



According to the CHE, RETA has received a grant from the federal Technology Literacy Challenge in each of the past two years, in the amounts of $100.0 and $450.0. This program supports the CHE/SDE Action Plan for Teacher Preparation and Professional Development.
