SUMMARY

Synopsis of HAFC amendment

The amendment addresses the suggestion described in the " Other Substantive Issues " section below.

Synopsis of Bill

The bill adds language to the statute that establishes minimum hours for the length of the school day . The bills describes how schools will be permitted to extend school hours during the day or weekends to meet the needs of the school districts.

Significant Issues

SDE mentions that research demonstrates that the traditional school day may not meet the needs of many students. These students because of social or economic reasons may be better able to attend school at other times of the day.

The bill clarifies that school hours may be extended beyond the traditional hours to meet the requirements of students.

Currently some alternative schools provide for the extension of the school day.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

According to SDE the extension of the school day may result in an additional fiscal impact on school districts.

The bill contains no appropriation.

OTHER SUBSTANTIVE ISSUES

SDE suggests amending the bill on page 2, line 7 by striking " the school district " and replacing with "students" .
