SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

House Bill 762 appropriates 150.0 from the general fund to the Department of Health in FY 2000 for the purpose of increasing the public and professional education on the dangers and treatment of obesity and for the payment of anti-obesity prescription drugs not eligible for reimbursement under the medicaid program for low income persons in need of treatment for critical or chronic obesity.

Significant Issues

Obesity is not often thought about as a serious medical condition that can cause illness or death. In addition, being obese predisposes individuals to additional problems and is a contributing factor to cardiovascular disease and other conditions.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

The department has the necessary fiscal controls to properly account for these funds.

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

Administration of these monies is within the budgeted capacity of this department.

POSSIBLE QUESTIONS

1. How was the appropriation amount determined? How many individuals will be served with this appropriation?
