Synopsis of Bill



House Bill 784 appropriates $50.0 to SDE for the purpose of providing funds to school task force programs in Las Cruces that focus on preventing school violence.

Significant Issues



Included in the public school support request for fiscal year 2000, the State Board of Education requested $1,500.0 to support the implementation of school level safety plans in all 89 school districts.



FISCAL IMPLICATIONS



House Bill 784 appropriates $50.0 from the general fund to SDE for expenditure in fiscal year 2000. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2000 shall revert to the general fund.



According to SDE, New Mexico schools receive a total of $2,920.1 in federal funds from Title IV, Improving America School Act for Safe and Drug Free Schools. The Las Cruces school district receives $238.2 from Safe and Drug Free Schools grant and is allowed to implement programs that prevent school violence with this source of funding.

SDE indicates that current staff can handle this project.
