SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

Senate Joint Memorial-3 requests the tobacco industry to commit to a substantial campaign to discourage the illegal sale of tobacco products to minors. The memorial further requests the industry to insure that tobacco products are displayed and stored in locations that are not accessible to minors, and finally that copies of the memorial be sent to every business licensed to wholesale tobacco products in New Mexico.

Significant Issues

Senate Joint Memorial-3 simply requests cooperation from the tobacco industry in order to police the illegal sale of tobacco products to minors. The memorial is concerned with the high numbers of young adults that become addicted to tobacco products on a daily basis and wants to insure that all possible actions are taken to insure that minors do not come in contact with these products except after they have reached the age of 18.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

There are no fiscal implications associated with this memorial.

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

The memorial calls upon the Taxation and Revenue Department and the Secretary of State to provide copies of the memorial to each wholesaler and lobbyist registered to represent the tobacco industry.
