A JOINT MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO TO CREATE A MULTI-FUNCTIONAL MULTI-DISCIPLINARY BIOTECHNOLOGY CENTER FOR COLLABORATION WITH THE SANDIA AND LOS ALAMOS NATIONAL LABORATORIES AND THE HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER ON RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY AND BIOENGINEERING PROGRAMS.



WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico has personnel and other resources such as micro-fabrication laboratories, medical and biology laboratories; and

WHEREAS, the biotechnology industry has recently grown in New Mexico and federal support for research offers more opportunities; and

WHEREAS, there is tremendous technology transfer opportunity in New Mexico related to work at the Sandia and Los Alamos national laboratories, the university of New Mexico health sciences center and the other universities;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the university of New Mexico be requested to establish a multi-functional multi-disciplinary biotechnology center for research and development, biotechnology maturation and teaching and training to promote state-of-the-art research and education programs and economic development; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the center be multi-disciplinary and cooperative with engineers and computer, medical and biological scientists in business, Sandia national laboratory, Los Alamos national laboratory, the university of New Mexico health sciences center and other universities; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the president of the university of New Mexico.
