A MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO FUND THE CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW CAMPUS FOR DINE COLLEGE IN SHIPROCK.



WHEREAS, on August 12, 1998, a fire engulfed more than a third of the campus of Dine college in Shiprock; and

WHEREAS, an estimated seven million dollars ($7,000,000) is needed to make necessary improvements and upgrades to the campus; and

WHEREAS, Dine college is an important element in the Navajo Nation's efforts to educate and prepare its young for employment and expanded economic horizons; and

WHEREAS, four million five hundred thousand dollars ($4,500,000) has been raised towards construction of a new campus; and

WHEREAS, the Navajo Nation is seeking ten million dollars ($10,000,000) from the federal government to match the money already raised;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the United States congress be requested to support the Navajo Nation in constructing a new Dine college campus in Shiprock; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the New Mexico congressional delegation.
